As a real estate agent, it’s not uncommon to find yourself caught up in a whirlwind of activity, from attending trainings to meeting with vendors and chasing leads. But have you ever paused to ask, “Is this truly moving my business forward?”
In the real estate world, we call this the “busy trap.” It’s that sneaky feeling of productivity we get when we’re constantly doing something, but not necessarily the right things. We confuse being busy with being productive, and that’s where the trouble starts.
How We Get Stuck in the Busy Trap
I’ve seen it countless times with agents I’ve coached—and, yes, I’ve fallen into these traps myself. It’s easy to feel like we’re making progress, but in reality, we’re simply staying in place. Here are a few common ways real estate professionals get caught in the web:
- Attending too many trainings: When you know enough to start implementing, but instead, you sign up for another course or webinar. The problem? You end up gathering information instead of taking action.
- Meeting with vendors without clear purpose: These are the meetings that fill up your calendar but don’t actually serve your goals. If you’re not intentional about the “why” behind the meeting, it’s just busywork.
- Working with unqualified buyers: We’ve all been there—spending too much time with buyers who aren’t properly prequalified. They’re not ready to commit, and you’re losing precious time.
How to Avoid the Busy Trap
If any of this sounds familiar, don’t worry—you’re not alone. The good news is, there are simple ways to avoid getting stuck. Here are my top three tips:
- Create and stick to a schedule: Planning your time with intention helps you focus on the tasks that truly matter. Map out your priorities and stay disciplined.
- Use alarms to stay on task: It’s easy to let one activity take over your day. Set alarms or timers to remind yourself to switch gears and stay on track with your schedule.
- Get accountability: Whether it’s a colleague, a friend, or a coach (of course, I’m biased), having someone hold you accountable will help you stay focused on what really matters.
Make Room for What Matters
At the end of the day, it’s not about how much you can cram into your schedule—it’s about making sure your actions align with your true goals. The next time you feel busy, ask yourself: “Am I doing something that moves me forward, or am I just staying busy?”
