This weeks theme is “Imagination”. Imagination is another mental faculty that us humans are fortunate to have. And for those who USE their imagination, even more fortune is enjoyed.
Look around, everything that has ever been created began in the mind. Your phone, your home, heck, even your kiddos. Your job, the products and services your company offers. Literally everything.
Imagination is an incredibly powerful tool because it allows is us to travel away from the physical reality that our five sense pick up and create new thoughts and ideas in our mind. From there, we use our other mental faculties like reason, memory, perception and so on to bring the ideas into the physical form. Pretty awesome!
For some, the imagination muscle is weak. That happens, oftentimes, as a result of people in our lives telling us not to use it. They say things like: “That’s not real”, “don’t be silly”, “have you ever seen/heard/tasted…blah blah blah”. Sound familiar? …and so it begins, our childlike minds get stifled from people (God bless ’em, they don’t intend to do this), completely abandoning imagination and as a result, limiting our thinking and creativity.
How’s your Imagination muscle?
If you want to develop your imagination, I have an exercise for you. Pictured below, is a “life wheel”. It divides our lives up into smaller compartments. Generally, this tool is used for a self assessment, where a person would rate each area and get a sense of where they are excelling and where more focus/attention/tlc could be added. While that practice is valuable, I have something a little different in mind for you.
Forget the rating for now – it’s not necessary.
Instead, for each category, take some time to IMAGINE, to DREAM, to FANTASIZE. If ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE what would each area look like for you?
Really take the time to move through this exercise. Your answers may come quickly and others not so much. That’s A-okay. Do what you can. Come back to it and repeat until you get through it. Continue to work with this toll until you have a clear picture. Then what?
I’ll leave you with one of my favorite quotes from Bob Proctor: “If you can see it in your mind, you can hold it in your hand.”
